Nuclear Reactions

A neutron is said to have thermal energy when it has slowed down to be in thermal equilibrium with the surroundings (when the kinetic energy of the neutrons is similar to that possessed by the surrounding atoms due to their random thermal motion). Studies at SNRI show that the most common examples of this are Light Water Reactors.

SNRI has discovered that we don't have to wait for slow spontaneous fissions to occur. By irradiating samples of heavy nuclides with slow-moving thermal neutrons it is possible to induce fission reactions. When 235U absorbs a themral neutron, for example, it splits into two particles of uneven mass and releases an average of 2.5 neutrons.

SNRI Research
Current

SNRI provides scientific and technical leadership in fundamental and applied theoretical research in applied and fundamental nuclear physics, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology. Members of the Theoretical Division at SNRI frequently contribute and collaborate beyond these core disciplines as opportunities arise.
